Premier of Dead Beat Dad!

Hey Guys! I cant believe I posted about this in a million other places and neglected to mention it here, but I would love it if you took a minute to check out my new web comic, Dead Beat Dad!
I'll be updating at least once a week from now on--it's actually part of the webcomics class I'm taking right now, but I plan to continue the comic after I graduate (!!)
So yeah, take a gander, and I'd love it if you took a minute to let me know what you think!
Also, thanks for voting in the poll concerning the webcomic! I know a lot of you liked the idea of Darned, but don't worry, I still have plans for that series ;)

Buddah

I'm in a comic-y sort of mood lately (which is good, as 24 hour comics day is coming up and also this stuff is supposed to be my job). So I thought I'd try my hand at this little web-comic thing that may or may not rhyme with "gouda". Heeeere's.... hmmm. Well, I'll show pages 2 and three in progress. I need to bump up the contrast a lot in Page 2... ugh. Uuuuugh. Using a limited palate is going to drive me bananas. If anyone has any suggestions, that'd be just swell. Page three is included just because I like drawing birds so gosh darn much. I think I feature birds in almost every comic I've done this past year or two. Yaaaay! Sadly these birds have a terrible fate in store for them. Just terrible. Blame the History Channel for what I am about to do...

I've been known to draw comics every so often

For whatever insane reason, I've decided I want to do a webcomic, mostly so I'll have more sequential pages to show editors. I've got the first few pages drawn out and now I'm going to play around with some different inking styles before I start posting weekly.

Time to play Catch Up

Poor neglected blog. Lots of things have been happening though, and life has been crazy as the semester has started to wind down.

1. I got an internship at Gaijin Studios along with Jackie, Tommy, and Domo X) Unfortunately I'm not really going to get into it until the fall semester, but I'm really psyched about it. I know I'll get a lot out of it.

2. Went down to Savannah for Editors day last weekend, along with Shawn, Chris, Megs, Allan, and Pat. Got lots of good feedback from all sorts of professors and editors--Oni Press, DC, Slave Labor, Del Ray--and met lots of really cool people. I felt a little discouraged for a day or two afterwards, but I've had time to reflect and re-motivate myself, so now I'm ready to bust ass this summer and get my work in gear.

3. Um... I thought there was more. I went to Cartoon Network yesterday 8D; Fun times... Now it's time for finals chaos! Good heavens. Wish me luck.

But then...Summer plans!

A. As I said, I'm going to be studying as much as I can while on break. As many observational drawings as I can get in, and anatomical/inking studies. I think I'm pretty good with pacing and storytelling, I just need to find a way to get my sequential pages to look as nice as my illustrations...

B. Working at the Bookstore again X) I love it there, really~ Easy job, awesome people, and cheap books! Wins all around!

C. Driving to A-kon the day after I fly back to Texas, then flying BACK to Atlanta to drive up for HeroesCon *_*; And I'll be back AGAIN early for the fall semester so I can make it to Dragon*Con X)

As my poor professors well know, I'm just really bad about getting around to scanning my work. I HAVE been doing drawings for all of the Temple of Cartoon Mojo Sketch Challenges this semester... they're all just still in my sketchbook 8D; But here's a few things I actually have gotten around to scanning...

Aaaaaand, here's the creature I'm working on for Creature Anatomy. I'll try to remember to scan the study sketches Shawn's made me do for it. I can definitely say this has been the first actually really challenging class I've taken at SCAD so far... animals are just not anything I can draw instinctively, so I cant fudge as much stuff as I can normally get away with XD;;;


Oh! Offer! If anyone wants a customized Blogger layout, just let me know, and I'll try to hook you up. I like making them, but it gets ridiculous if I keep changing the layout here all the time ^^;; And it will give me good design practice for over the summer!

History of a Tempestuous Romance Pt 1: Middle School

I drew this in my little mini travel sketchbook a few weeks ago, when I was experimenting with the Hi-Tech C pen Shawn hooked me up with. Anyone that knows me knows I have... interesting luck with guys. Especially since moving to Atlanta. Not that it's been HORRIBLE, but I dont think I've ever had a remotely 'normal' relationship, or go about things in a sensible manner. Whenever I tell someone about my romantic history, they inevitably have a good laugh, and tell me I should really do a comic about it.

This is my attempt to do a streamlined version of such.

1. 5 hour car trip of extreme geekiness with the amazingly talented Shawn Crystal, Chris Schweizer (who both have titles coming out with Onipress soon which look AWESOME), and Chris Brunner (who, among a shit ton of other things, has done designs for Avatar which just blows my mind.)
2. The Great Aja hunt, assisted by Bob Pendarvis, who, along the way, also introduced me to half of Savannahs sequential department
3. Random comic house party in the ghetto! Woo! Preceded by Thai food and followed by Bubble Tea! Double Woo!
4.Heidi Arnold panel/impromptu portfolio review! Awesome!
5. SONIC ADVENTURES OM NOM NOM
6. Random portfolio review from Sanford Greene! (Who did some of the art for the Avatar trading cards that are coming out. Are we sensing a pattern?)
7. AVATAR AND ZITI PARTY! ENEMY BIRDS BEWARE!
8. Mark Schultz inking workshop! That man does just... mindblowing things with a brush pen that I know I'll never be able to do, but I now feel much more confident in experimenting with a brush *A* Also he drew a sketch for me! *A* *A* *A* SOOO PRETTY. I tried to convince him to come to Atlanta to teach. That'd be wicked awesome. Wicked.
9. Random Savannah Shopping/Eating Adventures! Savannah is huge and terrifying!
10. Panel with all of the artists, which was super awesome.
11. HEY, LETS WORK ON FINALS NOW, YEAH?
12. Surprise!Breakfast with pretty much all of the artists that attended the forum. Jeff Parker, Kaz Strzpeck, Clement Sauve, Jill Thompson, Sanford Greene, Mark Schultz, Chris Brunner, and Heidi Arnold as well as a small handful of the Sequential Professors. Being as intimidated as I am of artists, I was really really unsure of what do do with myself 8|

13. Artists in the park time! The Atlanta crew + Clement met up with John Lowe and his family in the park and Chris B. and I had swingin' fun times.
14. Returned and immediately went to work to pick up my schedule + a copy of Bombos Vs. Everything since I read it in Savannah and decided it was the greatest comic EVER.
15. ...profit? 8D;


And to make this at least a little more interesting, here's some of the work I've finished for my storyboarding final, which is about 20 advertising comps for a Harry Potter-themed product 8D Fun stuff

Trying out new inking styles for the comic I'm working on with Sam, which I'm tentatively calling "The Object". This style is largely based on the blocking/shapes technique Shawn taught in class yesterday, and uses a lot more black then I usually put on a page. I rather like this as there's less need (if any) to add tones and whatnot.
Anywho. Here's page one.

So, AWA was a bust, but at least now it's over and I dont have to worry about it anymore 8D I've got at least two comic scripts to keep me busy now, not to mention school work. But I tend to stay much happier when I have a full schedule, so no complaints from me.

Here are the finished perspective assignments from a week or so ago. Finally got around to scanning 8D; Hopefully soon I'll have some actual sequential work to show.

Character Sketches for current comic project 8D

Okay so, I know I have a mountain of different Livejournal accounts at this point, but none of them are professional enough to like, publicly display. So consider this my effort to maintain a serious art blog. The majority of what I post here will be WIPs of school assignments, as well as any comic projects that I may be working on.
Having just started a new semester at SCAD, and finding a script that I really want to illustrate, I figured now would be the perfect time to get this place off of the ground.
For my first post I have a couple of really crappy examples of the perspective assignment I'm working on. Backgrounds are my biggest weakness in comic making right now, so I'm going to work hard this semester to start getting them to look decent.



I was liking this one so much more before I started inking it. Even with a .005 micron I still feel like the lines are too thick and shakey. I just need to experiment a bit more, and I have a feeling I'll be doing this one over ))8 Besides, I'm retarded and spelled "coffee" wrong, and never realized it until I started inking the word. Dur hur hur.



Used some photo refs, but mostly drew this subway car from the top of my head, which is why the dimensions look a bit funk-tastic. I'll be fiddling with it a bit more, and probably add a couple of passengers before I start inking.

And for kicks, check out my work area at home. My poor back. I miss my art desk back in Texas. At least then I didnt have to crouch on the floor when inking ;___;
