Premier of Dead Beat Dad!

Hey Guys! I cant believe I posted about this in a million other places and neglected to mention it here, but I would love it if you took a minute to check out my new web comic, Dead Beat Dad!
I'll be updating at least once a week from now on--it's actually part of the webcomics class I'm taking right now, but I plan to continue the comic after I graduate (!!)
So yeah, take a gander, and I'd love it if you took a minute to let me know what you think!
Also, thanks for voting in the poll concerning the webcomic! I know a lot of you liked the idea of Darned, but don't worry, I still have plans for that series ;)

Did I say last time I was looking forward to this break? Because it doesn't feel like a break at all. I transferred to a much bigger, much busier book store, and now I'm just crazy exhausted from finding books for people all the time x_x

Whenever I get a chance though I'm working on comic stuff--got a few character sheets for one project that I need to hurry up and scan (still need to hook up my scanner here!), and I started doing a random comic project for myself, mostly just for practice. I'm thinking I may make it a webcomic type of thing.

If nothing else though, I'm trying to follow the example of Eric Canete and now Professor Shawn Crystal and do one inked drawing each day. I started the beginning of December and have missed three days already, but really, 6 ink drawings in less than two weeks is pretty damn good for me. But yeah, I really need to get a working scanner here 8D;;;

So much art after a long Hiatus!

Poor, poor neglected blog. It'd be a bit of an understatement to say this semester has been insane. I've had all studio classes where I'm having to actually turn out pages and still make them look good, so my work load's kicked up a lot this quarter. On top of that I have to balance my crazy schedule at the book store, find time to spend with a awesome guy I met that happens to have a crazier schedule than me, and now I'm dealing with a crazy new room mate as well. I'd say my life is pretty exciting, if it wasn't wearing me out so much. As much as I've enjoyed this semester (Editors Forum! Friday Temples! Small Classes!), I'm more than ready for the holidays. I'll be heading back to Texas all of December, and hopefully I'll remain productivewhile I've got the time off. I definitely have projects I need to be working on anyway.

Anywho, to prove I'm not all talk, here's some examples of what I've been working on lately.

This is page one of a three page comic for Nolans Digital Coloring Class. Now I just have to throw down some colors on here @_@

These pages are a 3 page silent argument story done for Shawns Visual Storytelling Class.
Dont ask why, but a lot of my stories this semester have tended to be somewhat dark and violent 8| . . .

Aaaaand Some character sketches for my Final in Visual Storytelling. This 6 page comic is going to kick serious ass. I'm just warning y'all now.

Oh yeah, and a colored response to one of the Temples sketch challenges. I haven't had time to do any other ones yet, but I was restless the other night and needed to knock out an illustration for old times sake. I haven't gotten to do a pin up in months ;_;
(Technically the challenge was The Batman, but I still dont like him very much, so I used this as a good excuse to draw Tim Drake. What? Stop looking at me like that.)
Also, they're apparently standing in a giant mountain of Mashed Potatoes. On a roof top. Dont question it, just accept it.

Panel Transitions Using Black and White Shapes

These are like, waaaaaaay old, from my Intro To Sequential class, but my BFF is taking the class now, so I'm scanning this assignment for his benefit. It's basically just doing a variety of panel transitions, using only black and white shapes instead of lines. It's not an easy assignment, and requires a good knowledge of how light creates shadows and what not. Once I got used to it, I found it really fun to draw like this X) I'm using a similar technique for a Materials Project I'm working on now (I will be the master of spot blacks dammit!)

I think I'm missing a couple... but you get the idea X)

Life Update and random Spiderman Art

Been a while since my last post, but I've definitely been keeping busy with my art. I recently decided to quit my day job, actually, so I could focus more of my time and energy on my school and comic work. Also they were sort of jerks there, so whatevs. I gotta bust ass to make it worth it now.
I've got a ton of projects being juggled, and con season will soon be upon us, but I'm really only planning to be at Heroes Con, AWA, and possibly A-kon, and will be selling copies of the art book at all of them.
I also recently got in touch a BFF from High School, Brenna L, who is currently a kick ass illustration major out in San Fransisco. I adore her work like crazy, so we've decided to team together and form WRENCH, and hopefully we'll put out a lot of awesome collaborations (whenever we each get enough spare time *sobsob*)


Um, just because I feel lame when I dont post art, here's my final project from Drawing for Sequential Art last semester 8D; I need more practice doing super heroes.... 8\ But it was a fun project to work on~

Aaaack, I don't know if the deadline's already passed or not, but so far I've only managed to finish half of the line art of my submission for SCADs sequential anthology cover thingy D8 I'm also going to have to scan in in two parts: This, the foreground, and then the background figures/city and color it in Photoshop. I plan on using flat, graphic colors, so it shouldn't take TOO terribly long, but then I have a lot of other projects to be working on this weekend too D8 ALAS.


(P.S. Yeah, he's supposed to be signing 'book'. ORZ.)

New character design project is proving to be much more challenging than the last one.  Sci-fi action heros are very much not my genre.  But I'm a big Brad Bird fan, so I'm trying to come up with characters that'll fit into the Incredibles Universe.  As Nolan pointed out though, the biggest problem is coming from the fact that I have to flatten out a three dimensional style.  But, like I said, yay Brad Bird, so I'm cheating a little and watching a lot of The Iron Giant.

I think my alien will probably end up being a robot.  Which I will then have to draw various action poses and facial expressions for.  I think I'm making this a little more difficult than it really has to be :| But I am determined to make it work!

This is what I have for my Sci-fi Hero so far.  He looks um.... sorta rough and tumble, I suppose.  But he's based on Henry Rollins, with a touch of the punisher and an unintentional smidge of The Phantom.  And because of the pixar thing I'm now starting to worry he's looking a little too much like Shawn's Blood Red guys :\ Which is why I added the Mohawk... But he's a rocker super hero!  His melodic screams knock out all of his enemies!  He is...

Just as suspected, now that I'm getting assignments the drawings and sketching is coming a lot more naturally again, which is great. What's not so great is how little sleep I've gotten this week. I feel generally irritable and cranky, and thus my room mate is to be pitied.
But yes, school work is already coming along well. Today in Story boards/Character Design we did self-portrait turn around caricatures and worked on character designs for The Princess Bride. Awesome. *_*

Car drama is slowly being resolved. There is no hope for the truck so I have to sell it to a salvage yard and find somewhere to live that's closer to school/work, so that's a bit of a headache. It could be much worse though. At least I can still car pool to work with my aunt 8D
And by camping out at SCAD the night before my Intro to Sequential final I was able to stay up all night and re-do the pages I had left at home *lol* So they're not as good as they could have been, but they're not half bad, considering the circumstances.


I've also scripted out a new mini comic that I'm strongly thinking about submitting to the next Rising Stars competition. Lets see if I can bust my ass over break so I can finish within the deadline 8|

So, AWA was a bust, but at least now it's over and I dont have to worry about it anymore 8D I've got at least two comic scripts to keep me busy now, not to mention school work. But I tend to stay much happier when I have a full schedule, so no complaints from me.
